Black History Month UK ( in October 2022 ) was Big, Brilliant & Bold. In a word it was a Blast! There were so many highlights for us at The Black Secret, from the many live events we hosted as well as others we took part in ( way too many to remember the exact number ), to getting to meet in person many of our London based ‘Progressives’ at some of our events, it was a delight and a pleasure to meet you that month.
One of our most memorable encounters was meeting a very special supporter of The Black Secret, a certain Dr Julius Garvey. We had the privilege of meeting him for tea at a ‘plush’ and well-heeled Central London hotel. Dr Julius Garvey, the son of the one and only Marcus Garvey, the founder of UNIA and Pan-Africanism. He was in the UK for Black History Month 22'. He had travelled to Liverpool and Bath the week before and had returned back to London for appointments in Lewisham and lastly Lambeth to meet young people, community leaders, and dignitaries. In-between his London appointments, he invited us for a sit down and a spot of afternoon tea with him, not once but twice!
Dr Garvey had become aware of The Black Secret Education Project through our Youtube adverts and our social media presence and reached out to us a little while ago in September 22'. So, of course, whilst he was over here on tour in the UK we had to make time to meet the great man himself. We not only had tea with Julius Garvey ( in my case Green Tea ) but also discussed a great many things, politics, history, Pan-Africanism ( as you might imagine ) and also music and particularly Jazz, of which we discovered we all share a passion for. It was truly a pleasure to meet the great man, and good to know The Black Secret, has the endorsement and support of the son of Marcus Garvey himself.
