What's Happening: Spotlight on Africa Global Radio

Greetings Black Secret Progressives,
Earlier this year, I had a chance to return home to Ghana for the first time in over 4 decades ( some of you may recollect my adventures to the land of my birth from previous newsletters ). And what a glorious experience it was, reconnecting with family members, the land in all of its splendour and glory and the beautiful populus at large. A spiritual return which truly nourished the soul. It was also an opportunity to meet in person a few of The Black Secret's strategic partners based in Ghana. I met Bro. Nana Kwame and Sista Nana Gayle, the founders of the Splemore Institute, an independent African centred school doing great work, whom The Black Secret supports and sponsors.
I also got the chance to meet another of The Black Secret’s partners while I was out there, on the very last day of my stay in the Motherland, and that was Africa Global Radio and its co-founder Yasmin Bitugu. Based in the heart of the capital Accra, near Kokota Airport, Africa Global Radio is a young and vibrant radio station making waves across Ghana and the African continent. Yasmin was motivated to create Africa Global Radio as a response to the negative images and perceptions of Africa which still persists in the mainstream and public imagination at large. Launched three years ago on Ghana’s Independence Day, the 6th of March 2020, Africa Global Radio was set up to serve as a global platform where African voices can tell Africa’s story from an African perspective throughout Africa and the Diaspora.
Positive Vibes
The ethos that Yasmin and Africa Global Radio have is ‘Positive Vibes’. So much of the news content that is report about Africa in general, whether in the West, the Global North ( or even partially in Africa itself ) is of a negative nature or has a pessimistic slant, and is hardly close to been the truth or reflective of what’s really going on in the continent. AGR brings the ‘positive outlook’ of what is really happening in Africa through their live daily shows and podcasts, covering a wide range of subjects and interests, with a focus on current affairs, the creative arts, lifestyle and fashion as well as history and academia. Their live flagship show ‘Africa Daily’ even has a segment called ‘Good News’ that brings the latest headlines of positive events occurring across the Continent. They also have a feature called ‘Did you know’ which showcases facts about African history and achievements, much of which is little known to the general public.
We love the ethos and approach of AGR and their whole focus on vibrancy and bringing a positive outlook to the way that Africa is discussed and presented in the media. We also hold the same views and values as AGR. For us it is clear, if we want to see the paradigm change in terms of how Africa and her people is perceived by the world at large, whether on the Continent or in the Diaspora, we have to tell our own stories, present our own histories and we have to control our own narratives. We have to be at the centre, and be actively influencing and disseminating what is said about Africa and how it is presented to the world, otherwise we will never see results that are truly reflective of who we are as a people.
The Tour and Interviews with Victor & Yasmin
Whilst I was at AGR I got a chance to meet some of the young creatives in charge of putting together the radio shows and podcasts. I was also given a tour of the offices and studios where the magic happens. You can check out my visit to Africa Global Radio below, in a video where Victor shows me around before I interview him about his many roles at AGR. As well as my interview with co-founder Yasmin Bitugu in what turned out to be an illuminating discussion.
I was also interviewed by Yasmin in turn, whilst I was there for AGR, on my experience of returning back to Ghana for the first time in 40 years, my involvement with The Black Secret and why History is fundamental. Check out that interview below.

History is Fundamental
Yasmin believes that History is important, in the interview I had with her, she described history as being “Fundamental, to knowing your identity as an individual and being able to navigated your future”. A sentiment that we at The Black Secret whole heartly agree with. History is central to an individual’s sense of self and their understanding of who they are. It shows them what they can aspire to and what they can achieve throughout their lives. This is why here at The Black Secret, we are so motivated to bringing you the most comprehensive program in Black History and African Heritage, because history has the power to transform and directly impact people’s lives in a positive way that is beneficial to not only to themselves, but also t their families and the community at large.
